Kathy Weaver, CNWI
Kathy has been involved in nose work for over fourteen years. She has competed with Belgian Tervuren, an Australian Shepherd, and a Parson Russell Terrier. Although no longer teaching group classes, she remains active in nose work judging NACSW and USCSS trials, volunteering at trials and sniff-and-go events, and teaching workshops. Kathy is an active member of the NW K9 Sniffers club.
One of the aspects of nose work she encourages in training is allowing dogs to organically evolve their own method of searching and communicating with their human partners.
With a strong belief that positive reinforcement training fosters enthusiasm for the sport, Kathy prefers training setups in which the dog is successful and learns effective searching and problem solving with minimal handler influence. She believes a step-by-step approach enables dogs to build on previous experiences to increase drive, confidence, and knowledge.
